The cost of doing business OR How not to hire your wedding photographer.

Recently there have been a rash of responses to a woman in Seattle seeking a wedding photographer via Craigslist. Might not be the typical way of finding a wedding photographer, but I suppose it could work...if you went about it in a sane manner, which unfortunately, she did not.

WHY is finding an amazing wedding photographer so difficult? :/

I am a Bride who is getting married this summer and have yet to find a decently priced, exceptional, amazingly talented, fun photographer.

WHY because the word “WEDDING” is involved photographers think they can change you $ 3,000.00 for wedding photos? Oh, because no bride is going to go without so they are going to pay it, because they HAVE to. They are ripping people off for all they have! Why when you want to get married it costs you AT LEAST 15 grand after all is said-and-done? Its such CRAP!! I love all you $ 3,000.00 photographers out there but i think your prices are WACK. All your doing is hanging out at a wedding taking tons of photos and editing them.. and thats owrth 3 GRAND!!! You’re making so much money its crazy. I just wish people would be more realistic. I mean the “average” persons salary for 1 freaking month is somewhere around 3 grand. (Thats making 19$ an hour) So you’re going to take someones WHOLE MONTH paycheck for one flippen day of photos? Just because you CAN!!?????? So that maybe they will not be able to feed themselves or pay any other bills they have, right? It makes me SICK!

I know im speaking for more than just myself right now. Alot of brides out there think the same thing. & I bet all you fancy photographers wont even read this. oh-well.

Maybe there are cheaper photographers that will read this and LOVE to take my photos.

I'm not going to write my own response, because I am not primarily a wedding photographer. I am going to share some of the better responses I have seen to this ridiculous post. And it is ridiculous. I usually try not to bad mouth anyone for their thoughts and opinions, but this woman is clearly speaking without having a knowledge base to draw from.

Kristen Booth's response is flooding facebook among my photographer contacts today, and with good reason. It get the point across in a well written manner, but it's also quite funny to read.

Because, weddings aren’t just every other day. YOU as a bride, should know this.

I wake up the morning after every wedding, feeling like I got ran over by a train…..weddings hold a much higher level of stress than just an everyday shoot. You get one chance to capture it. You have to have the right equipment to get the job done, and not to mention backups….in case those fail. Anonymous Craigslist bride…do yourself a favor and please do not discredit your wedding day this way. The word “WEDDING” means a great deal actually. So yes, we are entitled to charge more for this highly stressful service, because it is a wedding! But it is quite silly to label this to photographers only. It goes for every wedding service! I mean unless you regularly spend hundreds of dollars on a single bouquet of flowers or $1500 for a dress?

Mike Picnic, editor of Randomn3ss.com, has been down the Wedding photographer craigslist post rant before, and does it with a tongue in cheek response, that gets the point across without question.

Thanks for the love, can never have enough of that. Now, I’m not going to argue the $3,000.00 figure you keep because that’s somewhat dependent on where you live, you’d be lucky to find a photographer in New York City for that much and in Po-Dunk, Anywhere it might be three times the going rate, so for this we shall stick to it. We don’t hang out. We run a business. A business that has overhead, such as insurance, gear upkeep and maintenance, transportation, advertising, web design and deployment, brochures, sample books, etc. All at a cost. While most wedding photographers don’t have the overhead of an actual storefront, they still incur costs in their home / home offices such as lines for fax machines, Internet, computers, etc. Also, there is no W-2 form when you are a sole owner or LLC, this means you need to pay taxes in most states quarterly, most photographers off-load this to an accountant, an added cost. There are no paid sick days, vacation days, personal or doctor days, those are luxuries not afforded to a wedding photographer. Likewise, business hours are virtually every hour of every day. There is no show up at 8am, take lunch from 12:30-1:30 and leave at 5pm, it’s in your best interest to answer phone calls at 8pm while you’re enjoying a movie with your family or reply to emails at 1am, so the client always feels their wedding is the most important in the world.

Nikki Wagner's approach to answering this ridiculous add was to make a full run down of the costs involved, and fully admits that her prices probably aren't as high as they should be to be making a profit at the end of the year.

My wedding prices aren't this well thought out I'm afraid.Mine are based on number of hours shooting, number of hours editing (roughly 3-4 / hour shooting), factor in cost of hiring a second shooter if required, factor in cost of goods offered in package (albums, DVD etc, plus packaging for said), small contingency percentage, and there you have it.

So, how NOT to hire a wedding photographer - go online and complain and make broad assumptions on how much money photographers make.

Sandra & Barrett get Married

I found myself having to find a new second shooter on rather short notice for Sandra and Barrett's wedding at the beginning of July, and despite being rather nervous about it, working with Justin of Zozo Studios couldn't have gone any smoother. Things are starting to come together for my first solo exhibition at The Hive Artists' Hub. Posters and postcards have been distributed, I've posted the event on facebook, and it was even featured on Art Rubicon. I have all the pieces hung in the gallery and just need to add the signage and finishing details to be ready for opening night on Friday. If you're local to Medicine Hat, look for me on Chat news either tonight or tomorrow (I'm not sure when it will be airing) as I was interviewed this morning for a piece on the arts and culture minister.

Erin Farrell, a professional photographer in Delaware, recently wrote a refreshingly eloquent rebuttle to the "Your camera takes really nice photos" comment.

Imagine that you’re baking dessert for a party. It’s your special recipe: the one everyone asks for. You make it from scratch, of course, never looking at the recipe that you committed to memory so long ago. Sugar, beaten eggs, sift in the flour… you’re crafting something delicious from basic elements. Now you’re at the party and everyone is gushing about your dessert. The flavor! The texture! But most of all you’re being asked, “what kind of oven do you have? It makes great cakes!”

That’s pretty much how a photographer feels when people look at their photos and say, “your camera takes great pictures.”

She goes on to explain here experiment using her camera and a non-professional behind the lens, vs. herself taking photos with the same model in the same location. A very interesting article. Read her whole blog post here.

I had the honour of taking Maternity photos for my kid brother and his beautiful wife a couple of weeks ago. The rain let up just long enough for us to head over to Confederation Park in Calgary, and spend some time in the great outdoors. The photos turned out beautifully!
I can't wait for little miss A to make her grand entrance in just a few short weeks!

And with it comes one of the busiest months I've had in a long time as Joel and I finish up the long drawn out project that has been our house renovation. March 2010 is month 37 in the renovation process that was only supposed to be a cosmetic fix and take 3-4 months.

Built in between 1908 and 1912, our house is a beautiful to the bones example of fine craftsmanship. It had fallen into disrepair as the neighbourhood fell down around it, and had been part of the low end rental market for about 10 years, and had a reputation for being a drug house. We names her Millicent, and gave her a complete overhaul, making her a brand new 100 year old house.I will write again for the grand relieve wen we're finished, but I am getting so excited taht I just had to share a little bit of the progress we've made, and also ask patience from my clients over the next couple of weeks while we finish up and get settled in.

BEFORE: This is the powder room on the main floor off the kitchen. When we bought the house, it had only a toilet in it, and the nearest sink was the kitchen sink. There were about 5 guys living in the main floor suite at the time. Needless to say, it was disgusting! As you can see, the window doesn't have a curtain...and it faces the backyard, which can easily be seen from the busy sidewalk outside the fence.

AFTER: New obsured glass window, new electrical and plumbing, new drywall (including boxing in the plumbing stack) and ceramic tile floor, new door and trim, new toilet and the tiniest cutest sink ever. It may be small, but it is quite posh now. We still have to add the glass mosaic backsplash and the towle bar etc, but this is the room that is closest to being finished.

2009: the good, the bad, and the ugly

2009 was an unbelievable year, and not neccessarily in the good way. Although there were definitly good times and great memories, I am not sad to see the back side of 2009 as it leaves and makes way for 2010, which invariable has to be a better year.

Highlights:
I got to travel quite a bit this year...
Seattle in April with my good frined Ian.
Saskatchewan in early July with a group of photographers for a ghost town convention, and then again in late July with my sister as we travelled Alberta and Saskatchewan on out "Biggest Things" road trip.
Victoria in October as support crew for my friend Jennifer's first half marathon.
And Hawaii for almost 3 weeks in December with my partner's family.

I watched my 3 beautiful nieces grow and change throughout the year. It is amazing to see how much they change in such a short time when they are so young.

I made new friends through a female photographer's group I am part of, as well as strengthening another friendship originally made through photography.

I have also met some wonderful people through my photography business and I am convinced I have the most beautiful clients ever, both inside and out!

Lowlights:
I was laid off in January...and again in September. Being unemployed is tough, and knowing that in order to persue my career I will have to reloacte takes quite a toll on me at times.

My partner and I had a tough emotional year, and were not sure at times if we would make it through the tough times together. We are working on our problems everyday and hopefully 2010 will see us stroonger than ever.

Things to look forward to in 2010:
I will have a new niece or nephew in July! My brother and his wife just announced that they are expecting, so I will have a new little one to play Auntie Paparazzi to.

Our house will finally be finished in the next month (6 weeks tops!). It has been a long journey (almost 3 years of renovating)but having a beautiful house in the end will be worth it (I hope)!

Continued relationships with friends and loved ones, and working relationships with clients (current and new).

I've taken on yet another year of self portrait (year 4 - I must be insane); it is always interesting to see what that project has in store. And on that note, here is a video of 2009's 365days project extras, a whole year's worth in 7 minutes.

A friend of mine from high school contacted me a few months ago and asked if I would like to shoot her wedding this September in Banff. After I agreed to that, she asked if I would like to be her witness, and would I mind bringing a date to be her soon-to-be husband's witness.

Yes, they eloped!

It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining, the leaves were starting to change colour, the water was a crystal blue that matched the big blue alberta sky, and there were a few additional guests in the form of a bee interested in the brides flowers, a couple of golfers passing on the near by course and a raft full of tourist floating down the river.

I had the pleasure of taking grad photos for the son of one of my first clients last week. It was a family afair as his parents, grandmother, and girlfriend joined him for his big day.

We had originally planned to do the photos outdoors, but the weather decided not to cooperate in the least, and we were forced to resort to using the Esplanade as a backdrop, as did a few other photographers. But we managed to stay out of each other's way for the most part.

Life has been busy and good of late, and I have been sadly neglecting this little corner of it.
I have been enjoying the warm spring weather when we have it, and we are working away on our house. Hopefully we'll actually get to move in sometime this summer!! (Fingers crossed). We've also got the garden planted and a firepit built in the backyard (which we already used for my birthday last weekend).

On the photography front, I have been keeping up with a couple of my newborns (good friends not sister and brother) from late last year with 6 month sessions. I just can't believe how big they have both gotten.

Little Miss E will be in for her 9 month session in the next couple of weeks.

And last Friday, a good friend and fellow photographer's wife, came in to have her Maternity portraits done. It was such an honour to be asked to do them for her, as I have always looked up to her husband and his work as a source of inspiration.

My very good friend Julie has decided to push her choreography forward, and I couldn't be more proud of her. I met Julie in Interior Design college and we became fast friends. She was there getting training for her second career after a devistating accident left her unable to dance. Dance is her true passion, and she has kept teaching it part time all the way through school and since. She's recently been faced with some tough choices, and is pushing the dance to the foreground again. She asked me to do some promotional shots for her portfolio to help get her name out there.

I have known Paul and Tanya for a couple of years (he's my sister-in-law Sarah's brother), so when We were asked to shoot their 10th Anniversary Celebration, I jumped at the chance. I knew from Sarah's wedding, that this family was easy to work with, and really knew how to have a good time. I knew it was going to be fun and easy...and they did not let us down.

Life has gotten far more complicated than I generally care for lately, and as a result I have been forced to put my photography on the back burner for the time being.

the busiest time of year!

This holiday season has been busier than usual for me this year.

I joined my cute little spook's family for their pre-Christmas celebration to capture the day for them. With 8 adults and 1 baby, it was by far the largest group I've had to organize thus far...

...apart from just the silly stuff that is...like the 'family' photo I took when Joel's family came over for Christmas Eve dinner...

Christmas day I didn't even take my Alpha out of the bag. I did get a new little point and shoot to keep in my purse though (since my other one has been acting strange since having a bottle of water dumped on top of it in October)...and Joel got me a tickle trunk to keep all of my photography props and backdrops in! I also got a new prop from my sister - a lovely lace parasol.

Boxing day my brother and his lovely wife came over to have new headshots done, as neither of them have had new ones since University, and it was time...

The 27th the family piled into vehicles and took a day trip to Calgary to visit with my little niece for her first Christmas. It was so much fun. She's 11 months old, and runs around like there is no tomorrow!

Yesterday I went round to my sister-in-law and her husband's house to take the first portraits of my brand new niece who is 18 days old today. She was such a good girl!

And today I had my last session of 2008; a maternity and family session with a couple expecting a little boy in mid January.

All that combined with the excitement of Christmas, Chris & Tenille's wedding (last post), and taking photos and making Christmas cards,

December has been quite a busy month. I will be taking the last days of 2008 off, so I can be refreshed to get right back to it come January!

This past weekend, I shot my first wedding as lead photographer with the help of my good friend Ian. I had been looking forward to it for a while because the couple were so much fun. They said their vows on stage in a movie theatre built in 1914, and even had popcorn for their guests. It was an amazing day, and Chris and Tenille were a dream to work with.

I have had a hectic, yet exciting couple of weeks! The overall reception to Visual Musings Photography has been fantastic, and it really has been keeping me on my toes, with wonderful sessions, questions and a little bit of creative stuff too. I've had two absolutely wonderful Maternity sessions in the past weeks. Each set of parents-to-be adding their unique flare.

2 weekends ago my session was with a couple expecting their first baby. They were looking for something artistic and moody, which really helped me push my lighting skills, and the results were amazing...

This past weekend I had a fun, and very relaxed session with my beautiful sister-in-law. It was a completely different atmosphere working with her than other moms because I know her. She even brought me coffee! I haven't had a chance to go through all the session yet, but the few I've looked through make me very excited to see the rest!

Her hubby and their first baby stopped by near the end for a few family shots too...this big fuzzball has so much energy it's hard to catch him sitting still!

This coming weekend is going to be busy, but very exciting. Friday I will be heading over to my Brother-in-law's house to take some family photos in honour of their daughter's 3rd month birthday on the 6th. And Saturday I am shooting a very exciting wedding with the help of a colleague. It is going to be such an amazing day, and I can't wait to share! And last this weekend, but certainly not least, Joel and I will be celebrating 11 years together...where does the time go!

I have had a spectacular long weekend filled with amazing sessions and exciting plans!

Sunday morning I had a fun session with the lovely Kelly. She's mom to 2 teenage boys and doesn't take any time for herself, so our session was all about HER!! It was loads of fun having her play dress-up and get into character for her "just for fun" glamour shoot. And even though she was nervous, she totally rocked it!

After the session with Kelly I met the most amazing couple, T&C, to talk about the details of their upcoming wedding in December! I don't want to give away any of the details, but I will tell you that it is going to be so so good. The couple told me that there are NO suggestions that will be considered over the top, and they want more of a paparazzi feel to their wedding shots...not the typical story book wedding stuff! EXACTLY the type of weddings I want to do!

And this morning I met a beautiful 4 week old little girl, her big sister and their Mommy and Daddy! Little K tested out all of her body functions, and may very well be allergic to me she sneezed so much, but we got some really great shots...including a really sweet series of big sis giving her a little cuddle! And big sister S coloured be some drawings too!

And now I am going to a brand new British import candy store with my mom!

It's All Hallows Eve tonight, but this afternoon I had a client shoot with a brand new bouncing baby boy. His mommy went out and got a pumpkin as a prop for this afternoon's shoot, and we pulled in some of her other Halloween decor as well, and had a little fun with little T. who is 15 days old today.

The shoot went well I think, but it was a bit of a rocky start...I don't think T likes me much, every time he opened his eyes and saw me he'd start crying... I'm not a meanie I swear!

But once he calmed down we managed to get some really beautiful photos...I'm especially fond of the ones of him and Daddy together...

First Maternity Session - Two paws up!

I had my first Maternity session on Friday evening, and it went wonderfully! The couple were an absolute dream to work with, and even their little man Jackson (seen with mommy and daddy left) was all smiles.

I'm not even going to pretend that I wasn't nervous going into this one. It was a first on so many levels...my first Maternity shoot, my first session with someone I didn't know, and my first time officially incorporating the family pet...but all things considered things went so so well.

Thanks L & D! You made my job easy!!
